Update: Habibba Moneque Walker is now reported to be on life support. The Jefferson County Sheriff’s received incorrect information saying that she had died. The search for the suspect continues.

BIRMINGHAM — A domestic violence case in the McDonald Chapel community is now a homicide investigation, according to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office. Just before 8 a.m. this morning, police responded to a domestic violence incident in which a 45-year old woman was shot and was taken to an area hospital where she later died.
Police are seeking her ex-husband, Dereck Jamaille Walker, 46, as the suspect in the shooting.
Habibba Moneque Walker has been identified as the victim. She lived at the 300 block of Trenton Street in the McDonald Chapel community, where police say that Dereck Walker broke into.
The children fled to a neighbor’s house and suffered no injuries during the incident. However, Habibba Walker was shot as she tried to leave the house and was critically injured.
Police say that the suspect was seen fleeing in a silver Acura. Dereck Walker is described as a black male, bald with a beard, standing at 5’8” tall and weighing 200 pounds. His car is described as a silver 1996 Acura TL with Alabama tag 1CM3884.
