BIRMINGHAM – A suspect has been arrested and charged in the April 1 murder of a man at 64th Court Way South in Birmingham, according to Lt. Pete Wiliston from the police department.
On the morning of April 1, Birmingham police officers responded to a report of a man shot at the 7533 64th Court Way South. When they arrived on the scene, they discovered the victim who would later be identified as Derrick Mason, 37. He was found in the courtyard area suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
After medics from Birmingham Fire and Rescue were called, Mason was pronounced dead at the scene. Police learned that he had gotten into an argument with a man, leading to him being shot.

On April 22, Denzel Hankins, 21, was charged in the shooting death of Mason. He remains at the Jefferson County Jail on a $175,000 bond.
