TRUSSVILLE — The Trussville Police Department’s K9, named Leonidas, has received body armor several months after it was announced that the non-profit organization, Vested Interest in K9s, said it would provide a bullet and stab protective vest.
The vest was sponsored by John and Gail Zapf of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. It has been embroidered with the words, “Protect this K9 and their partner”.
Vested Interest in K9s, headquartered in East Taunton, Massachusetts, is a non-profit that provides bullet and stab-proof protective vests to law enforcement K9s in the nation.
“The donation to provide one protective vest for a law enforcement K9 is $950.00,” the Trussville Police Department stated on its Facebook page. “Each vest has a value between $1,744 – $2,283, and a five-year warranty and an average weight of 4-5 lbs.”
Vested Interest in K9s is open to certified dogs employed by a law enforcement agency and are at least 20 months old.
