BIRMINGHAM — On May 2, at about 10 p.m. to 10:45 p.m., an Alabama State Trooper was injured following a three-vehicle crash on I-59 south bound at 22 street.
According to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, the trooper was working in the down town construction zone when the crash occurred. He was parked in the inside lane with emergency lights activated. A dually pick-up truck and a passenger car struck the trooper’s vehicle from behind.
The trooper sustained serious non-life threatening injuries and was taken to UAB Hospital. He remains hospitalized. The occupants of the other vehicles were also injured. ALEA stated that one of the drivers was taken to UAB Highlands but fled before investigators arrived.
ALEA investigators suspect that the crash was the result of the drivers operating their vehicles under the influence.
ALEA Highway Patrol’s Major Accident Investigation Team is looking into the case. Findings will be presented to the Jefferson County District Attorney’s office to determine what charges to file.
