From The Trussville Tribune staff reports
Summer is around the corner and that means no more pencils, no more books. Well wait, there will be books.
Libraries all over are gearing up for the Alabama Summer Reading Challenge including Springville and Trussville Public Libraries, which begins in June.
The summer reading program began in the 1890s as a way to encourage school children to read during their summer vacation, use the library and develop the habit of reading.
According to the American Library Association (ALA) benefits include creating a lifelong habit of reading; draw reluctant readers in through activities; increasing skills; and generate interest in both the library and books.
And, with it being summer, the program can just be fun and draw togetherness for all families.
Registration for the reading program at the Springville Public Library begins on Monday, May 22. Summer reading activities will be held on Thursdays beginning at 11 a.m. at Springville First United Methodist Church. Registration is required.
