TRUSVILLE — Hewitt-Trussville girls varsity basketball coach Tonya Hunter and her staff tipped-off her youth girls basketball camp on June 4.
Hunter feels that teaching the girls the fundamentals is key and having fun while doing it will only benefit them more at such a young age.
“This my fourth year doing this and every year is the same thing,” Hunter said. “Get them active and having fun playing basketball.”
The first part of the camp she focuses on are the basic techniques and fundamentals like dribbling with each hand and maintaining dribbles while increasing their speed and making crossover moves.
The fun part included a layup competition in which she separated the girls evenly on both sides of the court and each girl in the line had to make a layup. The team that reached 20 layups first won the competition. The loser had to do a popular dance called “The Floss.”
“If the kids aren’t having some sort of fun, then I feel as though I’m not doing my job as a coach. . . I love energy and having fun as well as coaching the game.” Hunter added.
The camp runs through June 7 from 1:00 p.m to 4:00 p.m. at Hewitt-Trussville’s Bryant Bank Arena.
