Two medical students from Clay and Trussville were among 10 others from UAB to receive scholarships from Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama.
These students were Hannah Zahedi of Trussville and Chelsea Clark of Clay. The scholarships are awarded under the condition that the students practice in underserved areas of the state after they graduate.
“I’m very grateful that I’ve been chosen for this opportunity and thankful that Blue Cross is investing in primary care,” said Clark. “Blue Cross has seen the impact primary care can make. It’s not just suffering we are preventing, but we will also be saving a lot of health care dollars.”
According to a statement by Blue Cross Blue Shield, most counties in the state “do not have enough primary care and behavioral health physicians,” prompting the company to make $3.6 million in scholarships available to the UAB School of Medicine for a period of five years.
