WASHINGTON D.C. — Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court Anthony Kennedy, 81, has announced that he will be retiring at the end of July.
In a letter to President Donald Trump, Kennedy said that he will end his status at the Supreme Court but will continue to serve in senior status.
“For a member of the legal profession it is the highest of honors to serve on this Court,” the letter reads.
Kennedy was nominated to the Supreme Court by Ronald Reagan in 1987 and was sworn in in 1988. After the retirement of Sandra Day O’Connor in 2006, he has been the swing vote on multiple decisions by Chief Justice John Robert.
