VALLEY, Ala. — A woman was arrested in Valley, Alabama Tuesday evening after leaving her baby in a hot parked car while shopping at Walmart.
The Times-News reports that the Valley Police Department arrested Casey Hornsby, 25, of Lanett, on charges of endangering the welfare of a child.
Police arrived on the scene after a Walmart employee reported that an infant was located in a vacated parked car. The temperature was reported to be around 93 degrees when officers arrived to discover the vehicle was not running with windows rolled up.
A Walmart employee along with some other coworkers and passerbyers were able to break one of the car’s windows and retrieve the infant who was reported as red, flushed, and lethargic. The infant, who had no injuries, was brought inside the store to cool off while police tried to locate the parent.
Police identified Hornsby in their database and paged her several times inside the store. Hornsby, who said she had forgotten the child was in the car, was spotted leaving the store and was arrested and charged with a Class A misdemeanor.
Hornsby’s other child, along with the infant have been since released to their father.
Valley Police Major Mike Reynold shared that “people have all the rights to do what they need to do to ensure the safety of a child.”
