BESSEMER —The Foundry Ministries staff and board of directors is has announced Darrell Garrett as the ministry’s Chief Operating Officer.
Retired from a 30-year career in fire service, Garrett will now utilize his life-saving skills to assist men, women and families burdened by homelessness and addiction. Serving with fire and rescue teams in the Alabama communities of Homewood, Forestdale, Graysville and Birmingham, Garrett most recently held the positions of Fire Investigator/Inspector, Tactical Medic, Public Information Officer and Administrative Lieutenant in Homewood, where under his leadership the department’s Heavy Rescue Team was created. Garrett is also an ordained pastor and has served as a student pastor and counselor at several local churches.
“When you are a fireman, you work 24-hours on and 48-hours off,” Garrett said. “That’s a lot of off time and I wanted to use that time to fulfill another passion of mine—student ministry. Through my church I became connected with The Foundry, serving meals with our students to men at the Changed Lives Christian Center.”
“We’re very excited about the experience and insight Darrell will bring to our ministry and those we serve,” said Chief Executive Officer Micah Andrews. “From his front-line experience responding to the emergency calls of those suffering from a drug-related event to counseling students and parents struggling with hardships, we have no doubt that Darrell is equipped to guide our program participants to success with grace and compassion. His knowledge of equipment, mechanical inspection and safety will also be invaluable in maintaining The Foundry’s many facilities.”
“I’ve spent the first thirty years of my career saving lives and now I’m going to spend the next twenty saving lives but in a completely different way,” Garrett said. “I am certain that I’m where God wants me to be and look forward to transforming the lives of addicted men and women for His glory.”
