ARGO — The Argo City Council met on Monday, August 27. Mayor Betty Bradley led the room in a call to order, heart-felt invocation and pledge of allegiance to the flag. Afterwards it was confirmed that a quorum was present and the council proceeded with city business.
The council heard from representatives of the Benjammin Sports Bar and gave its approval for the establishment to serve alcohol so long as it maintains a 60% to 40% food to alcohol ratio. The restaurant can now move forward with getting a liquor license from the ABC board.
Teen Council President Katie Whitfield spoke with the council and the Teen Council was granted permission to sell Argo branded t-shirts. Proceeds from the sales will be used to support community-oriented projects such as the National Night Out.
The council approved the adoption of a proclamation recognizing September as suicide prevention month. In doing so the council has committed itself to recognizing the important issue and raising awareness about it.
Fire Chief Heath Smith offered his letter of resignation to the council. The resignation was approved and he will be ending his tenure as fire chief on September 14. The council resolved to place Scott Payne as the interim fire chief, starting on September 15.
In other business, the council:
- Approved $1043.70 to repair the city’s maintenance truck;
- The City of Argo will maintain its relationship with St. Clair County, for the purpose of supporting Central Dispatch, EMA and access to a juvenile detention facility, for another year.
- City Hall will be closed for Labor Day
- Approved of the hiring of Kevin Stewart to replace an Argo police officer that has resigned.
The next Argo City Council will be held on Sept. 10 at 6 p.m.
