BIRMINGHAM – A deputy on patrol in western Jefferson County helped to rescue twelve abandoned dogs.
While patrolling along Highway 78 on September 2, at about 3:45 pm, near Birmingham-Jasper Road a deputy noticed seven dogs attempting to cross the highway. The deputy blocked a traffic lane and coaxed the dogs to the side of the highway so they would not be struck by a passing vehicle. The dogs were friendly and not aggressive. They appeared to be thirsty and malnourished. A passerby stopped and told the deputy that there were more dogs a little further up Birmingham-Jasper Road. Another deputy arrived and help to catch the first seven dogs until animal control could get there to assist.
Once the first seven were loaded into the truck, the deputy along with animal control continued along Birmingham-Jasper Road to search for the remaining dogs. Only a few hundred feet away they encountered another dog. When they stopped to pick this dog up, four more dogs emerged from the woods. Animal control had run out of space to transport the dogs so the deputy transported five of the dogs in his patrol unit. All of the animals were taken to the Greater Birmingham Humane Society.
