From the Trussville Tribune staff reports
TRUSSVILLE – On August 24,2018 Trussville resident Mary Barnhouse Reid turned 102-years-old. Reid was born in Elk Ridge, West Virginia which, during those years, was a coal mining camp. Then, as now, digging coal from the earth was a serious business and she lost her father to the mines when she was just 13-years-old.
She later met Dewey Reid when the young man left Alabama, for West Virginia, while in search of a job. Along the way Dewy Reid found much more than meaningful work, he found a wife. The two were married and by 1941 the couple had returned to Alabama and by 1947 they were settled in Trussville.
Mrs. Reid had four children, 11 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and 12 great-great grandchildren.
Mary Barnhouse Reid currently resides at the Peachtree Assisted Living home in Trussville.
The Peachtree home helped make a 102-birthday even more special by throwing her a party and making her feel like a queen for the day. She celebrated the event with a group of 60 that included friends, family and well-wishers. When asked about the secret to her incredible longevity she said, “Staying busy, being nice to people” and that she was a happy person.
