TRUSSVILLE — On Wednesday, starting around 6 p.m., local social media was abuzz about a peculiar sight at the cemetery next to the Episcopal church on Main-street. As one commenter described it “Ok PLEASE don’t think I’m crazy but we just passed the cemetery by the Episcopal church and the dead have risen!!! Somebody please get a picture, we were too scared to go back!!!” The text was followed by a weeping-with-laughter emoji, indicating a sense of amusement that characterized almost all of the comments.
As it happens there was a much less spectral explanation.
Trussville’s community theater group, ACTA, is preparing to mount a production of a new musical comedy based on the Addams Family. As often happens with staging a performance part of the process includes having a professional photographer take cast pictures. ACTA actors were, in full costume, taking part in a photo-shoot.
ACTA trustee Paige Turner said, “We definitely tried to be respectful of where we were. We got permission from the church, the chamber of commerce and the city. The cast enjoyed having the beautiful backdrop. The pictures really let them show their characters.”
Turner again stressed the reverence the cast and crew have for the location and stated, “[we] just wanted to make sure that we didn’t offend anybody.”
The Addams Family musical will premiere at the end of October and tells the story of an 18-year-old Wednesday Addams and the travails of her courtship with a “normal” boyfriend. Family members, from both sides of the Conformity Capulet and Montague Macabre divide, will inform and drive the narrative through comedic and engaging songs.
ACTA is also trying a couple of new things with this production.
For the Friday and Saturday performances, on each weekend that the show is running, audience members are encouraged to cosplay as their favorite Addams Family characters.
Also, tickets may now be purchased directly from the ACTA website.
