BIRMINGHAM –A search is underway after a man fired shots at Birmingham police officers in Ensley at around 3 a.m. on Sunday.
Police responded to shots fired call in the 400 block of Ninth Street West and saw a vehicle leaving the scene at a high rate of speed, according to Carol Robinson. The call came from an off-duty officer.
Police said the suspect’s vehicle stopped in the 500 block of Ninth Street West where the suspect, armed with a rifle, exited the vehicle and began firing at police who returned fire. Two police vehicles were struck by gunfire. The suspect returned to the vehicle and sped away.
At least one civilian victim was been wounded in the 400 block of Ninth Street West and transported to the hospital.
The suspect’s vehicle was later found abandoned in the 1900 block of Avenue B in Ensley at about 7 a.m. Blood was found in the vehicle.
Police dogs have been brought in to assist in the search and officers from the Alabama Bureau of Investigation are on location.
