CALERA – A threat issued through text message went viral on social media and got the attention of Calera High School and the Calera Police Department Wednesday evening, September 26.
According to AL.com Calera High School received a threat of a potential shooting at the school around noon on Thursday, September 27. The text, anonymously sent to a student making the threat, was investigated overnight and deemed as non threatening says police chief Sean Lemley.
The text read:
“This is an anonymous text to tell you Calera High School will be shot up @12. I’m warning as many people possible. May god be with you.”
A screenshot was created, posted and then circulated multiple times on Facebook.
Chief Lemley ensures that the investigation is continuing and that their presence will be made at the high school throughout the investigation.
A following statement was released this morning:
“The Calera Police Department received information about a threat being made to shoot up the high school at 12:00 p.m. today. A text message was anonymously sent to a student making the threat. The message was then posted on social media. This information was thoroughly investigated throughout the night and involved the assistance of the FBI. We have made contact of with those involved in circulating the text. While we will continue to take this case seriously, we do not believe this to be a creditable threat. However, we will maintain an increased presence at the schools while we continue to investigate this case. “
