TRUSSVILLE – The Trussville City Council on Tuesday approved a 21-day moratorium on demolitions in the Cahaba Projects.
The measure was introduced by Councilor Perry Cook Tuesday evening as a consideration for the residents in the Cahaba Project.
“I move to consider a moratorium until our next council meeting on November 13 for any demolition permits to the Cahaba Project area,” announced Cook. “I ask again for that the moratorium at that time so that Councilman Taylor, who is absent, can get back and have time to consider the further action. It will also allow the citizens of Trussville to consider their options and their desires to create some type of resolution to the situation and they can discuss themselves.”
Cook said that his proposal is to protect the Cahaba Homestead Project section, which he calls a “gem” to our city, state, and country.
“I just want to make sure that you all have time to wrap our minds and thoughts around it and then bring our project neighbors together without diversity and discuss in a calm manner,” he continues.
The motion passed 4-0, with council member and Council President Alan Taylor not in attendance.
Despite resistance from Councilor Brian Plant, who said that the moratorium is unnecessary, gave Cook his vote of support.
“I don’t feel like this is necessary, but in the spirit of trying to build consensus and trying to come together, I am willing to support this,” said Plant. “I understand the spirit that you are offering and that spirit I am willing to extend my support in this even though I don’t know that this is necessary.”
Cook added that “it may not be necessary, but it does give time without any given fear of something occurring between now and then. We all can discuss it with a level of clear thinking so we will know what to do with the Cahaba Project.”
Councilor, President Pro Tempore and resident of the Cahaba Homestead Project, Zack Steele, says he hopes that the Council will come up with a resolution before November 13.
