NEW ORLEANS — A man has been arrested after trying to sneak a backpack full of drugs into the Orleans Parish jail, according to WGNO.
WGNO reported that around 10 p.m. on Monday, 23-year-old Nicholas Celius was observed breaching the perimeter wall. A guard sounded the alarm and staff reported to the area.
According to the Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office, Celius managed to evade the guard, but left behind several containers of drugs and contraband. New Orleans Police Department officers were able to catch Celius a short time later.
Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office also reported that, at the time of Celius arrest, he was carrying a backpack containing marijuana, 12 pieces of crack cocaine and heroin.
“The Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office will continue to aggressively combat the constant efforts of individuals to introduce narcotics into the jail,” Sheriff Marlon Gussman said. “We appreciate the diligence of our staff to detect this latest threat, as well as the quick response of the New Orleans Police Department.”
According to WGNO, Celius is facing charges of drug possession, resisting arrest and an outstanding warrant out of Dallas, Texas. Two other suspects who were with Celius when he tried to break into the jail remain at large.
