Walton Donald Nelson passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Dec. 10, 2018.
He was born January 23, 1928 to Howard Francis and Velma Hollye (Shell) Nelson. He joined the Navy in 1945 and was on active duty until 1946. In 1951, he joined the Birmingham Police Department, retiring in 1982 as a Sergeant. He was a member of Hoover Lodge No. 644 F. & A. M and the Fraternal Order of Police.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Maurine (Rutherford), and his sister, Frances LaJune. He is survived by a brother, Bobby Hunter Nelson of Trussville, two sons, Walton Donald II of Antioch, California, and William Douglas of Birmingham, grandchildren Walton Donald Nelson III of Davis, California, Leah Kristin Demarcus of Pensacola, Florida, Sarah Elizabeth Nelson of Roseville, California, Tiffany Renee Nelson of Anna, Illinois, great-grandchildren Kylie Sophia Nelson, Gavin Tyler Nelson, and Ava Simone Nelson of Roseville, California, and Gunnar Brame of Anna, Illinois.
Visitation will be from 12 p.m. until 1 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 13, at Jefferson Memorial East in Trussville with graveside service to follow at 1 p.m. at Jefferson Memorial East’s adjoining cemetery.
