ALABAMA — Some Democratic tech experts have claimed that they experimented with “Russian style tactics” on the Internet during the special election for Senate between Doug Jones and Roy Moore, according to The New York Times and WAFF.
WAFF points out that no evidence exists linking the Jones’ campaign to these activities, or that they had any knowledge that the activities were being carried out.
WAFF has reported claims by the group that it used social media to pretend to be conservative Alabamians and use that position in an attempt to drive up negative stories about Moore while swaying conservatives to support a write-in candidate over Moore.
WAFF also reported that the group may have been behind the purchase of phony accounts, located in Russian, in an attempt to make it appear as though Moore’s campaign was purchasing social media followers.
The majority of campaign officials are not convinced that the activities swayed the election, although, according to WAFF, Moore Campaign Manager Rich Hobson believes that anything could have made a difference in the election.
