LAFAYETTE, La. — One person was wounded just after 4 p.m. on Christmas Eve in a shooting at the Acadiana Mall in Lafayette, Louisiana.
Police said the victim suffered non-life threatening injuries and was transported to a local hospital where they are in stable condition.
Lafayette Police released the following statement:
“On December 24, 2018 at approximately 4:19 pm, Lafayette Police responded to the Acadiana Mall located at 5725 Johnston St. in reference to shots fired. Officers located one victim at the scene. The victim was transported to a local hospital and is being treated for non-life threatening injury. At this time detectives are following up on several leads regarding the incident. No suspect has been arrested at this time. The investigation into the incident remains on-going.”
Mall employees said workers and shoppers scrambled for cover or fled the mall when the shooting began. The mall was immediately closed and will not reopen until 8 a.m. on Wednesday.
Police did not immediately comment on the motive for the shooting, but did release a photo of a black male that they called a person of interest. It is not known if that individual has been taken into custody or charged with the shooting.
