BIRMINGHAM — According to the Birmingham Police Department, detectives are conducting a homicide investigation following a shooting in east Birmingham. The incident occurred on Wednesday at approximately 9:15 p.m. It was the second homicide of the day reported in Birmingham.
The victim has been identified as Ronald Grant Jr., 39, of Birmingham.
Officers from the East Precinct responded to 4034 43rd Ave. N. to investigate a domestic disturbance. Officers arrived and located the victim unresponsive and suffering from a gunshot wound. Birmingham Fire and Rescue arrived and transported the victim to UAB Hospital for treatment.
Capt. David Agee said investigators learned that the victim succumbed to his injury prior to arrival at the hospital and was pronounced deceased.
Investigators received information that the victim was involved in a physical altercation inside the home prior to the shooting, Agee said.
A suspect was taken into custody at the scene. Additional information on this case will be released as it becomes available.
Earlier on Wednesday, at approximately 7 p.m., officers from the West Precinct responded to 1505 52nd St., Ensley, to investigate a domestic disturbance.
Officers arrived and located the victim unresponsive lying on the living room floor. The victim was identified as James Earl Hunter, 52, of Birmingham. Fire and rescue arrived and pronounced Hunter dead on the scene.
Investigators in that case said Hunter was involved in a physical altercation with another family member that resulted in the victim’s death, according to Agee. Investigators are waiting for results of the coroner’s examination to determine the exact cause of the victim’s death.
A suspect was taken into custody at the scene.
