MONTGOMERY — The Alabama Department of Public Health is issuing the state’s first eWIC electronic benefit transfer cards.
The pilot project allows approved foods to be automatically entered onto a card that is similar to a debit card. The card replaces current paper-based food instruments and cash-value vouchers. The first cards will be given to recipients in Autauga, Elmore and Montgomery counties. Jefferson County is expected to be given cards in July.
WIC is the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children. It is funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Food and Nutrition Services.
