WASHINGTON — Mae Krier made an appearance on Capitol Hill on March 21 to ask Congress to recognize Rosie the Riveter Day of Remembrance every year.
According to the U.S. Department of Defense, Krier also asked Congress to award “Rosies” — as women involved in the war effort at home came to call themselves — the Congressional Gold Medal for their work in the defense industry.
Rosie the Riveter is a cultural icon of World War II and her “We Can Do It!” image and attitude have inspired generations of women.
The 93-year-old told DOD officials she doesn’t remember exactly how she became a riveter, but she found work riveting B-17 Flying Fortress and B-29 Superfortress bombers at a factory in Seattle.
“We loved our work,” she said. “We loved our flag. We all pulled together to win the war. It was a good time in America.”
