MONTGOMERY — Alabama got closer to abolishing the issuance of judge-signed marriage licenses Wednesday.
The move comes as some conservative probate judges are keeping in their opposition to same-sex marriage, said WVTM. Some of these Alabama probate judges have not been issuing marriage licenses to anyone so as not to have to issue them to same-sex couples.
Couples interested in getting married would still be able to get the marriage form from a courthouse. However, it would be termed as a marriage certificate. The certificate would be notarized and returned to the courthouse, whereas under the current arrangement, a judge signs the marriage license before the wedding ceremony, according to WVTM.
According to Sen. Greg Albritton, he has proposed the bill so that access to the marriage documents can be increased.
WVTM said that the House Judiciary Committee approved the bill Wednesday. The next step in the process is for the bill to move to the House floor.
