Huskies softball took the opening round of the AHSAA Area Tournament after defeating Vestavia Hills 9-1 Tuesday night.
Kaitlyn Hughes had the win for the Huskies. Hughes gave up five hits and one run. She struck out nine and walked one. Hughes pitched seven innings for the Huskies.
Arden Plugge had the loss for Vestavia Hills. Plugge gave up eight hits and eight runs. She had one strikeout. Plugge pitched for three and two-thirds innings.
The Huskies offense went to work early in the first inning with Anyce Harvey doubling to center to score Crystal Maze.
Hewitt-Trussville put up another three runs in inning three with Riley Tyree, Abigail Dorsett and Katelyn Murphy contributing.
Hannah Dorsett, Tyree and Harvey put up multiple hits for Hewitt-Trussville. Dorsett had the most hits for the Huskies with three hits at four at-bats.
“We had a really good team win,” said Head Coach Tyler Burt. “(They) pitched well, they executed well and did everything we’ve been talking about. We had a good team win.”
Vestavia Hills had one run, five hits and three errors in the game.
Hewitt-Trussville had nine runs, 10 hits and one error in the game.
Hewitt-Trussville advances to a winner’s bracket against Spain Park. That game will take place against Spain Park Wednesday at 6 p.m.
