BIRMINGHAM — The Jefferson County Coroner has identified two men killed in a multi-vehicle crash on Saturday, May 11, 2019.
Jon Costello Nunley, 45, of Lambert, Mississippi, and David Wayne Matthews, 40, of Gardendale were pronounced dead on the scene.
Coroner Bill Yates said Birmingham Police were called to the scene at 5:10 p.m. on Interstate 22 at mile marker 92.7, which is near Brookside. Investigators concluded a GMC Sierra pickup truck traveling west crossed the grassy median and hit two cars. The first car it hit was a Chevrolet Equinox. The Equinox had minimal damage. The pickup then hit a Toyota Rav4 head-on.
The passenger of the Rav4 was ejected from the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene at 5:45 p.m. The passenger of the pickup truck was pronounced dead at the scene at 5:56 p.m.
The cause of the crash has not been released. The drivers of the GMC Sierra and the Toyota Rav4 were taken to local hospitals with injuries that were not life-threatening.
