CLAY — The city of Clay has installed a fountain in the middle of Cosby Lake. The purpose is not only to make the lake more attractive, but also to aerate the water.
The city has been working to have the lake dredged, or cleaned out, but has been waiting on the Army Corps of Engineers to approve a permit. City Manager Ronnie Dixon said it could be another year before the dredging is complete.
“We’re just trying to keep the lake going just one more summer until we can get the dredging done,” Dixon said. “We’re trying to keep some of the moss from building up in the middle of the lake.”
For the past couple of years, overgrown moss has filled parts of Cosby Lake. The city has tried adding fish to eat the moss and algae and they have added chemicals every year to keep the growth down.
“We treated the lake last week with chemicals to try and make sure the moss doesn’t grow on top,” Dixon said. “You can see it’s growing around the edges. The fountain should help keep it stirred up. It’ll push it over to the side and if it all gets to the side we can scoop it out.”
The water fountain cost the city around $3,800. Center Point Fire & Rescue helped install the fountain.
Mayor Charles Webster said he hopes to add lights to the fountain to make it visible at night.
