LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A penalty kick in the 90th minute Wednesday night put a halt on Birmingham Legion’s hopes of making a run in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. Louisville City FC’s Sean Totsch converted the PK to give Louisville the 1-0 third round win after Legion goalkeeper Matt VanOekel was called for a foul in the box.
One of Birmingham’s biggest threats in the defensive battle came in the 64th minute when two shots were blocked.
Louisville will await a random draw selection to determine its fourth-round opponent in the U.S. Cup against a MLS team.
Birmingham will return to USL action Saturday, June 1, when it hosts the Tampa Bay Rowdies at BBVA Compass Field for a 7 p.m. match. The game will be broadcast on My68.
