JEFFERSON COUNTY — The Jefferson County EMA is hiring for an officer position.
EMA officers work normal business hours and are on call two weeks at a time. Pension is through the city of Birmingham Retirement and Relief System and all inquiries and applications must go through the Jefferson County Personnel Board.

SUMMARY
Emergency Management Officers with the Jefferson County Emergency Management Agency work to save lives and protect property by developing programs and emergency operational capabilities that mitigate, prepare for, respond to, and recover from any emergency or disaster. Emergency Management Officers work to develop plans and protocols to prepare for emergencies or disasters. Emergency Management Officers respond during times of emergencies and disasters, work with the community, train others, and work with all levels of government (local, state, federal).
TYPICAL JOB DUTIES:
Maintains readiness of Emergency Operations Center so it can be quickly activated and fully operational in the event of emergencies or disasters.

Interacts with the public, members of the community, media and other agencies.
Responds to Emergency Management incidents expeditiously and according to established procedures and protocols within the county.
Trains personnel from various agencies and backgrounds in Emergency Management Operations.COMPETENCIES:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
The following Minimum Qualifications are required for this job. You must demonstrate possession of these qualifications by providing a detailed description of your related experience in the work history section of your application. Driver’s License AND
You must meet at least one of the three options listed below:
Option 1:
- Bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited college or university in Emergency Management or related field (e.g. Emergency/Disaster Management, Community/Regional Planning, Business Administration/Management, Fire Science, Fire Service Management, Emergency Medical Services, Criminal Justice, Public Administration).
Option 2:
- Coursework in Emergency Management related to an accredited academic degree.
AND
- Experience in public sector emergency management, private sector contingency planning/risk management, or military disaster preparedness operations, etc.
Option 3:
- Certifications from recognized/acceptable Emergency Management agencies or associations at the federal, state, and local levels (e.g. FEMA Emergency Management Institute or National Training and Education Division, International Association of Emergency Managers)
AND
- Experience in public sector emergency management, private sector contingency planning/risk management, or military disaster preparedness operations, etc.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Alabama Association of Emergency Managers (AAEM) Certification or equivalency from other states.
- International Association of Emergency Managers (IAEM) Certification.
- Military Emergency Management Certification or equivalent.
- Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in Emergency Management or related field (e.g. Emergency/Disaster Management, Community/Regional Planning, Business Administration/Management, Fire Science, Fire Service Management, Emergency Medical Services, Criminal Justice, Public Administration).
- Two or more years of professional and/or supervisory experience in emergency management (e.g. disaster/emergency preparedness, response, public safety operations, Incident Management System, Incident Command System).
