BIRMINGHAM — The Birmingham Police Department is investigating after a traffic incident turned deadly in the early morning hours of Wednesday, June 19, 2019.
Detectives said the driver of a Chevrolet Camaro hit a motorcyclist around 3:54 a.m., in the 1000 block of Third Avenue North. Another vehicle pulled up and two people got out and walked to the Camaro. Police believe the two then assaulted the driver of the Camaro and stole the car. The victim was left in the roadway. That’s when an off-duty Birmingham Police officer, driving in the area, hit the victim.
The driver of the Camaro was pronounced dead on the scene. The driver of the motorcycle was taken to UAB Hospital for treatment.
The Camaro was later found burned in the 300 block of 66th Street in Fairfield.
