From The Trussville Tribune staff reports
TRUSSVILLE — In response to a report by The Trussville Tribune about a Trussville Police officer who broke a window to rescue a dog from the Pinnacle Shopping Center, PETA issued an urgent warning about the importance of never leaving animals in hot vehicles.
PETA said on a 78-degree day, the temperature inside a parked car can soar to 100 degrees in just minutes, and on a 90-degree day, the interior temperature can reach as high as 109 degrees in less than 10 minutes. The only way a dog can cool itself is by panting because dogs do not sweat. They can rapidly succumb to heatstroke, even if they are in a car in the shade with the windows slightly open.
Anyone who leaves an animal in a hot car could face cruelty charges if the dog is injured or dies. If you see a dog left alone in a hot car, call local humane authorities or the police.
PETA released two public service announcements on the matter.
