SHELBY COUNTY — The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office reported an incident after a training event at the Sheriff’s Office Training Center on Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2019.
The sheriff’s office was conducting CS gas training Thursday afternoon. CS gas is commonly referred to as tear gas. Law enforcement is often exposed to the gas in order to familiarize them with the effects.
After the training was complete, the room in which the gas was deployed was vented externally. The gas made its way to the nearby Shelby County Humane Society and the sheriff’s office said several employees and visitors to the humane society became ill. Four people were taken to the hospital for treatment. According to a press release, the injuries were not serious.
The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office said CS gas is considered safe and the normal reaction to exposure to it is an irritation that is treated by moving to an area that is clear of gas. They do not believe the community is in danger.
