ST. CLAIR COUNTY — Several reports of a loud boom were reported from Springville to Clay on Saturday, Nov. 16, 2019.
The only report of an explosion was made in St. Clair County, at 4 p.m. Sheriff Bill Murray said someone set off Tannerite, in a car, on Buelah Circle.
No injuries were reported.
It is unclear if anyone will be charged or if the incident was connected to the loud boom heard in Clay. Some people reported they heard more than one boom.
Tannerite is the brand name of a binary target. According to the Tannerite website, the targets are designed to be safe and non-flammable. When shot with a high-powered rifle, the target produces a water vapor and loud boom, resembling an explosion.
Tannerite targets are often used in training by law enforcement or military. Hunters and marksmen also use the targets for practice. Tannerite can also be used to clear brush or in the manufacturing of other explosives.
