CLAY — If there is one thing that is certain come this Friday when Clay-Chalkville returns to Oxford in the Class 6A quarterfinals, it is that the Yellow Jackets will be out for blood … Not literally, of course.
The Cougars hold the honor of not only ruining Oxford’s undefeated season in what was a 26-21 victory on Oct. 18, but the Cougars are also responsible for ending the Yellow Jacket’s season in the past two quarterfinals. Clay-Chalkville won 45-9 in this past year’s quarterfinals and 31-15 in 2017.
Since that October loss, the Yellow Jackets have ticked off four consecutive wins. Oxford scored over 50 points in two of those wins. In its second round victory over Cullman, Oxford held the Bearcats scoreless in what was a 35-0 trouncing.
Clay-Chalkville has won seven straight games after its last loss on Sept. 20 to Gardendale. The Cougars have ridden a relentless defense that has allowed just 17 points per game this season.
The winner will have the honor of facing either Pinson Valley or Muscle Shoals in the semifinals.
