BIRMINGHAM — The Jefferson County Board of Education unanimously voted to designate $300,000 into the school district’s band program on Wednesday during a regularly scheduled council meeting.
The money will go towards purchasing band instruments on a per student basis.
“When I look around the area, most bands are struggling with their numbers,” Jefferson County School District Superintendent Dr. Walter Gonsoulin Jr. said. “But our bands don’t have that problem. We have several bands that have 150-200 students, and its growing all over the district. We’re very proud of everything that we do.”
Just recently, the Hewitt-Trussville Marching Huskies won the award for best in platinum class and best overall band, which earned them the Grand Champion Trophy for the highest combined score at the North Alabama Marching Invitational. There, the marching band earned the overall title of grand champions.
