TRUSSVILLE — The length and tenacious defense of Huffman proved to be too much for the Hewitt-Trussville boys’ basketball team as the Huskies dropped their second consecutive game and second of the season to Huffman, 53-66.
Hewitt-Trussville previously lost to Huffman, 58-66, on Nov. 19.
The loss sends the Huskies to 5-3 on the season.
Not much went Hewitt-Trussville’s way on Tuesday as Huffman held the Huskies to just four points in the first quarter. The Huskies did manage to pull within one point, 5-4, on a Tyler Pickett layup just over midway through the first quarter, but Huffman’s dominance in the paint along with Hewitt-Trussville’s inability to shoot the ball sent the Huskies into the second quarter trailing 14-4.
Pickett was the only Hewitt-Trussville player to score in the first.
The damage was somewhat mitigated after the Huskies scored six straight points throughout the first four minutes of the second quarter, which narrowed the lead to 16-12. That would be the closest Hewitt-Trussville got to nipping Huffman as the Vikings cobbled together a 7-2 run over the final two minutes to end the first half with a 27-18 lead.
That lead would stretch to 43-27 six minutes into the third quarter and continued to grow entering the fourth quarter. The Huskies did manage to hit four 3-pointers in the final quarter, but they just couldn’t solve the Viking’s full-court defense and springiness in the paint.
Hewitt-Trussville was led by Pickett’s 16 points. JaColby Thomas followed with 13 points and Cameron Glover added 11 points.
