BIRMINGHAM — Police in Birmingham are investigating two homicides after three people were shot and two killed in separate incidents on Saturday, according to Sgt. Rodarius Mauldin.
In the first shooting, officers from the West Precinct responded to a call of shots fired at 2626 Court R Ensley at 3:38 a.m.
Upon arrival, officers located one person unresponsive and suffering from a gunshot wound. Birmingham Fire and Rescue reported to the scene and transported the victim to UAB Hospital, according to Mauldin.
“Detectives received information that the victim was pronounced deceased by hospital staff,” Mauldin said. “Detectives were also advised that another person was transported to a local area hospital by private vehicle with non-life threatening injuries.”
While on scene, officers also encountered a person who was grazed and was treated on the scene for minor injuries sustained.
There are no suspects in custody and the victim has not yet been identified, Mauldin said.
At 1:55 p.m., officers from the West Precinct responded to a call of a person shot at 1541 Tuscaloosa Ave SW. The victim in that shooting was identified as Rickey Lane Hunter Jr., 48, of Birmingham.
Upon arrival officers discovered Hunter unresponsive on the ground in the parking lot suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Birmingham Fire and Rescue along with Jefferson County Coroner responded to the scene and pronounced Hunter deceased.
“There are no suspects in custody,” Mauldin said. “Detectives have not established a clear motive in this investigation.”
