Fort Walton Beach, Fla. — The sunshine and warm waters of the gulf must have imbued the Hewitt-Trussville boys’ basketball team with a glimmer of optimism as the Huskies snapped a eight-game losing streak on Friday and have now moved to 2-0 in the Northwest Florida Shootout.
Hewitt-Trussville, which had dropped to 5-9 following a loss to Wenonah on Dec. 19, has since defeated Fort Walton Beach-based Choctawatchee, 75-70, in overtime, and Miami-based Coral Park, 63-62.
The victory again Choctawatchee, which sits at 8-3 on the season, was the first win for the Huskies since defeating Hamilton, 75-65, on Nov. 25. Hewitt-Trussville had opened the season 5-1 before a loss to Plainview ushered in span that could be described as less than ideal.
The Huskies now advance into Monday’s finals game against Tate. The Aggies will enter the game 9-1 and are led by Love Bettis’ 24.5 points per game. Tate has a complementary of consistent offensive threats with Keshaun Black, Jordan Williams and Dennis Brown Jr. all averaging over 10-points per game this season.
Hewitt-Trussville will return to the seemingly hostile confines of Alabama high school basketball following the Northwest Florida Shootout finals. The Trussville Tribune has not reached out to Huskies’ head coach Jeff Baker for any word as to whether Hewitt-Trussville will remain in Florida to conclude the remainder of the season.
