BIRMINGHAM — An attempted traffic stop by Irondale police officers on Monday led to a pursuit that stretched from Irondale to Birmingham and resulted in a multi-vehicle crash.
The chase, which began just before 10 a.m., last around 30 minutes, according to AL.com’s Carol Robinson.
It began after officers attempted to pull over a vehicle with expired tags. Instead of pulling over, the driver fled, striking another vehicle in the process.
In the ensuing chase, the fleeing vehicle hit at least three other vehicles. The chase ended after the suspects crashed into several vehicles on Fifth Avenue South and Richard Arrington Jr. Boulevard. One innocent motorist involved in the accident was taken to the hospital with unknown injuries.
The three suspects were then apprehended. All the suspects were injured in the crash. One man had to be extracted and is said to have critical injuries. A female has unknown injuries and the driver appeared to have a head wound, according to Carol Robinson.
Media reports indicate that the three suspects looked to be under the influence of illegal substances.
