BIRMINGHAM – A man wanted for murder in Huntsville was found dead after committing suicide on Friday morning.
Cornett Demetric Evans, 46, was located by authorities in a Birmingham area hotel early Friday morning, Huntsville police Lt. Michael Johnson said. Evans was wanted on a murder charge following a Thursday morning shooting of a woman at the Sunlake at Edgewater Apartments in Huntsville. The woman was pronounced dead at the Huntsville Hospital at around 4:15 p.m. Her identity has not been released.
Following the shooting, Evans was reported to be suicidal and possibly traveling to a Birmingham VA clinic. All appointments at the Birmingham VA Medical Center and the Birmingham VA Clinic were then canceled Thursday. The hospital went on lock down as a precaution, as well.
There was no indication that Evans had actually arrived at those facilities.
VA locations in Birmingham and Huntsville are open for normal business hours today.
