BIRMINGHAM — Two people were sent to the hospital on Tuesday, Jan. 21, after a shootout with Jefferson County Deputies.
Chief Deputy David Agee said the deputies were attempting to stop a vehicle on Roebuck Parkway when the driver refused to stop. A chase ensued and the vehicle left the roadway and crashed into a tree in the 1600 block of 90th Place North in Birmingham, an area known as Zion City.
As the driver and a passenger exited the vehicle, deputies said shots were fired from the suspects. The front glass on the patrol vehicle was shattered. The deputies fired back and hit both the driver and the passenger of the vehicle.
The two were taken to the hospital for treatment. There is no word on their conditions. The deputies were not hurt.
The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s State Bureau of Investigation is investigating the shooting, at the request of Jefferson County Sheriff Mark Pettway. The case will later be turned over to the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office.
