TALLADEGA — Many have heard of it but never visited the “Home of the Marksmanship,” but the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) Talladega range is a 500-acre facility nestled beside the mountains of the Talladega National Forest. It offers much more than professional shooting competitions.
The park offers assistance for those shooting their first firearm and prides itself on offering youth the opportunity to learn how to become master marksmen. There is something for most ages and skill levels at CMP Talladega, although you must be 10 years of age or older to shoot at the range.
The state-of-the-art facility is one of the most high-tech firing ranges in the United States. The knowledgeable and accommodating staff remains on-hand at each of the complex’s multiple ranges.
CMP Talladega is open to the public and offers special events, firearm safety courses and a variety of ranges for rifles and pistols. No membership is required to utilize the facilities, although each visitor must watch a seven-minute safety video and sign a waiver.
Responsible firearm ownership is a top priority for CMP Talladega.
The ease of firing at electronic targets means shooters do not have to waste time or money hanging paper targets. The targets include triangular-placed sensors that register the fired projectile’s exact location. For those who do not want to shoot, there are closed-circuit monitors that show range activities.
CMP also hosts clinics, classes and match events. Visitors can also purchase firearms and accessories. There is a clubhouse and a pavilion that is open to the public.
CMP Talladega is open year-round. The park is located at 4387 Turner Mill Road, Talladega, AL, just two miles from the Talladega Superspeedway.
