BIRMINGHAM – The teenager captured following the Sunday shooting of an off-duty Birmingham police officer was charged with multiple felonies on Monday.
Jahmari Leshaun Wright, 16, faces charges of attempted murder and shooting into an occupied vehicle. He is being charged as an adult.
The charges stem from the shooting of Birmingham narcotics Det. John Finke, who was off duty and working at the Church of the Highlands when he responded to a robbery nearby in the 5400 block of Georgia Road in the Woodlawn neighborhood at around 9:30 a.m. The location is south of Birmingham-Shuttlesworth Airport.
Wright allegedly shot Finke, who was not wearing a protective vest, twice in the stomach and in the arm. Finke was transported to UAB Hospital where he has undergone surgery and is currently reported to be on the road to recovery.
The U.S. Marshals, the SBI, the ATF, SWAT and K9 units all reported to the scene following the shooting and established a large perimeter, which the suspects managed to escape from. Following an hours-long multi-agency manhunt, two suspects were taken into custody in Ensley after the cell phones that were stolen during the robbery that preceded the shooting tracked the suspects to a Winn-Dixie on Bessemer Road.
The victims of the robbery were able to identify the suspects. After apprehending the suspects, police recovered a handgun that is alleged to have been used in the shooting.
The Birmingham Police Department believe that Wright was the shooter.
Wright’s bond is listed as $200,000. He is being transferred to the Jefferson County Jail.
Birmingham Police are also seeking robbery charges against Wright and for the adult arrested alongside the teenager.
The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s State Bureau of Investigation is investigating.
