TRUSSVILLE — The YMCA of Greater Birmingham has transformed facilities into emergency school-age childcare centers to serve the needs of first responders, healthcare systems and vital and essential service providers.
The Trussville YMCA emergency childcare program will open on Monday, April 6.
“Since its inception in 1884, the YMCA of Greater Birmingham has been on the ground serving the needs of our communities,” the YMCA said in a statement. “This current crisis is no exception. The Y has a proven history of identifying needs and responding in bold ways of serving the community.”
The cost of the program is $20 per day and $18 for additional children. The YMCA said no child will be turned away because of a family’s inability to pay. Financial scholarships are available for those in need.
The YMCA plans to provide care for up to 500 children in grades kindergarten through eight, in up to eight locations. The Y has also worked with the Jefferson County Health Department to receive an exemption to provide childcare services.
The program will be open from 6 a.m. until 7:30 p.m., but there are additional costs for early drop off (6 a.m. – 7 a.m.) or late pick up (6 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.).
