BIRMINGHAM – The Alabama Department of Public Health unveiled a plethora of statistical data encompassing the underlying medical conditions of those individuals who have passed away from COVID-19, the demographics of those who test positive and the percentage of health care workers who have been stricken with the coronavirus.
As of Tuesday afternoon, the number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Alabama reached 2,197. Confirmed deaths in the state from the virus jumped to 39. There are 64 reported deaths.
There are 461 cases in Jefferson County, 30 in St. Clair County and 10 in Blount County.
There have been 14,765 tests conducted in Alabama with 271 hospitalizations statewide.
According to the ADPH, the demographic characteristics of those who test positive with the virus are:
Age
- Those aged between 19-64 make up 75.8% percent of people who test positive.
- 20.6% of people aged 64 years or older are coronavirus patients.
- Only 3.5% of patients are younger than 18.
Race
- 49.7% of patients are listed as white.
- 36.6% of patients are listed as black.
- 10.5% of patients are listed as unknown.
- Asians make up 1.3% of patients and 1.9% are listed as other.
Sex
- Females make up the majority of patients in Alabama at 55.9%. Males follow with 43.5% and those listed as unknown sit at 0.6%.
Ethnicity
- Not Hispanic or Latino make up 79.5% of patients.
- Those listed as unknown consist of 18.2%.
- Hispanic or Latino patients sit at 2.3%.
Healthcare and Hospitalizations
- The ADPH listed 116 patients as currently in ICU with 75 patients on mechanical ventilation.
- There are 315 health care workers who have tested positive, which is 15.7% of the cases in Alabama.
- There are 56 patients who work in a long-term care facility and 51 patients who are a resident at a long-term care facility.
Alabama Coronavirus-Related Deaths
- There have been 23 deaths from patients over 65 years of age, which is 59% of the total number of deaths. Only 16% of deaths come from patients aged between 19-64.
- Black and white patients consist of 87% of deaths (White 17; Black 17). Three Asians have died as a result of the coronavirus and two are listed as unknown.
- Males have made up the bulk of deaths related to coronavirus with 26 (66.7%), while 13 females have died (33.3%).
- There have been 33 deaths of patients listed as Not Hispanic or Latino. Only six were listed as unknown.

- Chronic Lung Disease – 9 deaths (23.1%)
- Diabetes – 17 deaths (43.6%)
- Cardiovascular Disease – 22 deaths (56.4%)
- Chronic Renal Disease – 5 deaths (12.8%)
- Chronic Liver Disease – 1 death (2.6%)
- Immunocompromised Condition – No deaths
- Other Chronic Disease – No deaths
- Multiple underlying Medical Conditions – 17 deaths (43.6%)
- Currently Pregnant – No deaths
