BIRMINGHAM — A man who died six days after being struck by a vehicle on Interstate 65 in Birmingham has been identified by the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office.
Chief Deputy Coroner Bill Yates identified the victim as Quintin Dewayne Martin, 51, of Birmingham.
Martin sustained critical blunt force injuries on April 6 at around 2:30 p.m. on the I-65 South access ramp at Daniel Payne Drive. Martin was walking down the access ramp when he was struck. A preliminary investigation revealed that Martin exited the vehicle as it traveled on the southbound ramp and began walking in the opposite direction.
The vehicle then drove down the opposite direction of the ramp and struck Martin from behind. The driver then fled the scene.
Martin was transported to UAB Hospital and was pronounced dead on Sunday at 1:17 p.m.
The Birmingham Police Department reported on Monday afternoon that the suspect has been identified as Patrice Lawson-Williams, 50, of Birmingham.
Authorities said that the case is being investigated as a homicide and the incident is possibly a result of domestic violence. Lawson-Williams was originally arrested on first-degree domestic violence, but those charges will be upgraded following Martin’s death.
Lawson-Williams is being held on $30,000 bond.
