CENTER POINT — The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office announced that deputies have taken a juvenile into custody on Saturday, April 25, 2020, in connection with the theft of a vehicle in Center Point that contained a 4-month-old child.
The baby, who was left at a doorstep in the 500 block of 27th Ave. N.W., is safe and was unharmed during the ordeal.
After the theft, witnesses reported locating the stolen car, which was a 2019 silver Kia Sorrento, in the 600 block of Earline Circle. Following witness descriptions, authorities arrested a 17-year-old male. The teenager subsequently admitted to stealing the car at around 9:48 p.m. on Friday night from the 600 block of 5th Way N.W. in Center Point, but he said that he did not know that the child was inside. He added that he attempted to return the car, but the heavy police presence deterred him from returning.
So instead, he dropped off the baby on the doorstep of the aforementioned residence. The homeowner then called authorities after she heard crying from the porch and that’s when she went out to look and saw the baby lying on the doormat unharmed.
The juvenile stated that he would like to apologize to the baby’s mother. He will be charged as a juvenile.
