TRUSSVILLE — Former Hewitt-Trussville High School baseball coach Phil English passed away on Monday, 18, 2020.
English, who was inducted into the Alabama High School Sports Hall of Fame in 1994, spent 28 years coaching high school baseball in Jefferson County at Ensley, Banks, Huffman and Hewitt-Trussville High Schools. He recorded a 566-217 record with 25 playoff appearances.
He won the Class 4A state championship with Huffman in 1977 and 1982.
“Coach Phil English was great mentor for fellow coaches and made a tremendous difference in the lives of the players and others he touched,” AHSAA Executive Director Steve Savarese said in a release. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family.”
English was a graduate of Ensley High School and Birmingham-Southern College. As an honor, English had two high school baseball stadiums named after him: Huffman and Hewitt-Trussville.
He was inducted into the Alabama Baseball Coaches Association in 2000.
