TRUSSVILLE — Despite the announcement that the 2020 AHSAA North-South All-Star Sports Week was canceled this summer, the Alabama High School Athletic Directors & Coaches Association has forged ahead with the naming of high school all-star players throughout the state.
On Tuesday, the AHSADCA announced the 2020 tennis all-star teams comprised of 2021 rising seniors selected by AHSAA member school team coaches. One the 12 players selected to the north girls’ tennis all-star team is Hewitt-Trussville’s Blakely Valdez. Prior to the cancellation of the spring sports season, the Huskies’ girls’ tennis team sat at 6-5 with seven matches remaining in the regular season.
It should be noted that Valdez is also a table tennis state champion following the Hewitt-Trussville girls’ table tennis team concluding the 2019 season undefeated.
“We are proud to announce these teams even though we are disappointed the All-Star competition set for the All-Star Sports Week this summer has been canceled,” Jamie Lee, Director of the Alabama High School Athletic Directors & Coaches Association, said. “However, these players have earned this recognition and will be receiving certificates from the AHSADCA for their selection to these prestigious squads.”
The North vs. South all-star tennis competition was held for the first time in 2019. The North swept the South, 8-1, in both the boys’ and girls’ matches.
